MAGNETIC AND MAGNETO-OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF Co/Pt MULTILAYER STRUCTURES

This paper presents some results from an investigation of the magnetic, magneto-optic and optical properties of Co-Pt bilayers, multilayers, and designed phase optimised "trilayer" structures. Suitable magnetic properties are obtained in N(0.4nm Co-1.1nm Pt) multilayers with the period number, N, between 5 and 10. The magneto-optical and optical properties of the multilayers are found to be in good agreement with those calculated from an equivalent single layer model. Calculations of the spectral response of these properties over the range 300-900 nm for the designed trilayers are found to agree very well with measurements on fabricated glass/Pt/(Co-Pt)/SiO2/Al structures.
