Innovative design and fast track construction of coal conversion for somerset station

1984
This paper describes innovative design features implemented as part of the coal conversion of Somerset Station. Performed on a fast track schedule which minimized downtime, the project realized capital cost savings and achieved early fuel cost reduction while extending the station's life and minimizing the impact on site arrangement and the environment. The paper highlights the effectiveness of close coupling new electrostatic precipitators, now required when burning coal, to their respective boilerhouses to avoid the need for a new stack, larger induced draft (ID) fans and extensive ductwork. Enclosure of bottom ash system pumps below a settling tank and installation of a wastewater treatment system in an abandoned coal preparation building are shown as ways to eliminate the need for new buildings.
