Localization of An Etopic Parathyroid Adenoma by Technetium-99m-MIBI Scintigraphy and An Intraoperative Gamma Probe

99mTc-MIBI scanning has become the preferred mode to detect and localize parathyroid adenomas in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. Here we report a rare case of ectopic parathyroid adenoma located in the left submandibular area. The lesion was successfully detected and localized by the 99mTc-MIBI parathyroid scan. It was unremarkable in the anterior image of the neck, but was clearly demonstrated on the oblique view. Subsequently, this parathyroid adenoma was resected rapidly and safely with the guide of an intraoperative gamma probe.
