Errors in Organizations: Building Bridges to Explore New Grounds

A phenomenon that has received much attention by scholars and practitioners alike is: errors in organizations. Errors are unintended deviations from plans or goals which may have both negative consequences (e.g., quality deficits, death, organizational failure), as well as positive ones (e.g., learning, innovation, and organizational resilience). To tackle this phenomenon, over the years a couple of distinct research streams have developed such as on error management, high reliability organizations, psychological safety, and strategic error management. While the separate progression of these streams has allowed sharpening their respective research approaches, this separation also comes with some challenges and missed opportunities. The aim of this symposium is to build bridges across the distinct perspectives by bringing together exemplary studies and scholars from the different streams.
