DESIGNING OF SYSTEMS USED TO REDUCE TOXICITY OF SPARK-IGNITION ENGINE AUTOMOBILES

1993
The USSR's programme to reduce emissions from the transport sector is outlined. Between 1970 and 1985 attention was focussed on updating engine design. Oxidising exhaust-gas neutralizing systems were designed. Neutralizers now in production are based on catalytic block carriers, electronic units and lambda-zonds. The limitations of these systems are outlined and improvements that will have to be made considered. The requirements that will be needed for systems to meet EEC emissions standards are listed. Problems are foreseen particularly in reaching targets for nitrogen oxides. An absorption- dissorption NO2 recirculation system is seen as promising. The mechanism of such a system is outlined. It is estimated that eventually all emissions can be reduced 2 or 3 times below current targets. For the covering abstract see IRRD 864909.
