Monitoring train speed using train speed bogie mounted sensors - accuracy and robustness

2008
This paper presents an indirect approach for the measurement of vehicle travel speed using inertia sensors mounted on a bogie frame, which may achieve a measurement accuracy far better than what is specified in UIC-5014-05 for wheel slide control. The new method processes output signals from the sensors to derive the time shift between the movements of the leading and trailing wheelsets of the bogie which in turn determines the speed. The general performance of the proposed method is assessed based on a conventional railway bogie vehicle, although the paper is more focussed on the study of main factors that may potentially affect the measurement accuracy and robustness.
