Development of an efficient and sustainable energy storage system by hybridization of compressed air and biogas technologies (BIO-CAES)

2020
Abstract The future electricity generation model will require the integration of intermittent renewable sources. For that, the development of new efficient and sustainable energy storage technologies is mandatory. One of the most promising technologies is the utilization of compressed air energy storage (CAES). However, this technology has a limitation related with the management of the heat generated in the compression stage. In this study it is proposed the integration of a CAES system together with an anaerobic digester, which will use the generated heat, supporting the production and storage of biogas as chemical storage of energy. The latter will be used in the air expansion stage to maximize the efficiency of the overall process. In this way, a new energy storage technology by hybridization of BIOgas and CAES is achieved: BIO-CAES technology.
