Interrelationship Between Chloroplasts and the Nucleo-Cytosol Compartment in Acetabularia

1982
In the studies on the interrelationships between the cell nucleus and cytoplasm the unicellular and uninucleate marine green alga Acetabularia has become favorite organism since Hammerling (1932, 1953), some 50 years ago, successful performed the merotomy experiment which had been suggested by Bover (1918). The clear-cut results obtained with cell fragments whose nucleus had been removed, as well as with the simple and convincing method of transplanting nucleate cell fragments onto anucleate ones, opened the experimental approach to problems related to nucleocytoplasmic interrelationships (Hammerling 1953, 1963, Brachet and Lang 1965, Schweiger 1969 Puiseux-Dao 1970, Bonotto et al. 1976, Schweiger and Berger 1979). More recently, other potent methods have been developed which again underline the exceptional suitability of this organism.
