Therapeutic Management of Cystoisosporiasis in 2 Pups

2013
Two ten weeks old Labrador retriever pups were presented with complaint of anorexia, mucous mixed bloody diarrhoea, vomiting and progressive weight loss for last three days. Clinical examination showed normal rectal temperature, rough hair coat, pale conjunctival mucous membrane, dehydration, intestinal spasm and open mouth breathing. Faecal samples were positive for unsporulated and sporulated oocysts of Isospora sp. on direct microscopic examination. Haematological studies revealed decreased haemoglobin (8.85 gm/dl and 8.8 gm/dl) and packed cell volume (29% and 30%). Therapeutic management comprised of oral administration of Ciprofloxacin, Tinidazole, intravenous administration of Inj. Dextrose sodium chloride (5% DNS), Inj. Ringer lactate and Inj. B-complex for successive three days. The pups recovered successfully.
