The pastures of Spain

espanolEspana es un pais con una muy larga historia de pastoralismo y con un alto porcentaje de su territorio cubierto por pastos.Los pastos proporcionan una amplia variedad de servicios ecosistemicos y por tanto contribuyen de forma significativa al bienestar de la sociedad. Tambien constituyen la base del sector esencial de la ganaderia extensiva y juegan un papel fundamental en el Desarrollo Rural Sostenido.Durante casi 60 anos, la Sociedad Espanola para el Estudio de los Pastos ha trabajado con el objetivo de promover el conocimiento y la mejora de los pastos espanoles. La cantidad de informacion acumulada despues de tantos anos es grande.Sin embargo, faltaba un documento que resumiese la informacion basica sobre los pastos espanoles.Siguiendo la idea de FAO de los Perfiles de Pastos de Paises, este trabajo proporciona una amplia revision de la informacion mas relevante sobre los pastos espanoles y los sistemas de gestion ganadera y de ungulados salvajes que sustentan. EnglishSpain is a country with an extremely long history of pastoralism and with a high percentage of its territory covered by pastures. Pastures provide a wide variety of ecosystem services, and therefore significantly contribute to society wellbeing. They also support the essential sector of livestock farming and play a key role in Sustainable Rural Development. For almost 60 years, the Spanish Society for the Study of Pastures has been working with the aim of promoting the knowledge and improvement of Spanish pastures. The amount of information gathered after all those years is incredibly high. However, a document summarizing basic information about the Spanish pastures is still lacking. Following the idea of FAO´s Country Pasture Profiles, this work provides a broad overview of relevant information about the Spanish pastures and the livestock and wild ungulate rearing systems they support.
