RELATIONAL EFFECT OF OCCUPATIONAL STRESS ON JOB SATISFACTION AND GENERAL WELLBEING AMONG CHEFS IN INDIA

2014
There has been a growing concern over the past many years that occupational stress can contribute to work related ill health, with negative effects on both physical and psychological well-being (Smith, 2003). Even though hospitality industry is one of the ‘low risk industries’ (Lo, 2005) among the service industries, working in this industry can be stressful due to long work hours and other unattractive terms and conditions related to the profession. From literature review it can be inferred that the work environment in the kitchen is highly stressful, both in terms of the physical conditions and the psychological ones, such as the pressure to conform to the kitchen norms. With the above background, this paper is an attempt to draw attention towards the understanding of relational impact of occupational stress on job satisfaction and general well-being of chefs. A total of 66 Chefs from Indian Hospitality Industry were surveyed. Data was collected through questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The results showed that occupational stress found to be negatively co-related with general well-being and positively co-related with job satisfaction.
