2021
Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is a constant plant in the National List of Medicinal Plants of Interest to the Unified Health System (RENISUS) of Brazil, which has been used for thousands of years as a spice for cooking and medicinal herb, and several of its compounds have already been identified and studied for their pharmacological effects. The aim of this systematic review was to indicate studies that refer to therapeutic action from the research with A. sativum, published between 2010 and June 2017, in two scientific databases (PubMed and Science Direct). Through the research on databases with the descriptor Allium sativum Linn, 4,282 publications were found. From this research, the analysis was structured in three stages: first we read the title of the articles, and the chosen ones in this stage were analyzed by reading the abstract, and in the last stage, the articles were read in full. Such analysis resulted in 55 articles of interest on garlic, from these ones, cardiovascular potential and antioxidant activity were the therapies that concentrated the largest amount of studies. This evaluation highlights the validation of important effects and pharmacological properties of garlic and its constituents which can be excellent options for the treatment of diseases.
