Synthesis of 3-Trifluoromethylbenzo[b]furans from Phenols via Direct ortho Functionalization by Extended Pummerer Reaction.

A variety of para-, ortho- and meta-substituted phenols is directly converted to the target 2-methylthio-3-trifluoromethylbenzofurans in a Tf2O-mediated reaction.
