Sporotrichosis on Face Successfully Treated with Itraconazole-A Case Report

2006
Sporotrichosis is a chronic deep fungal infection caused by Sporotrix schenckii. The most frequent route of infection is via a skin wound. Depending on the immune status, the cutaneous manifestations vary from a fixed lesion on the primary inoculation site to disseminated lesions through lymphogenic spread. Here we report a healthy 40 year-old man with fixed type sporotrichosis on the face. A skin biopsy showed granulomatous inflammation with spores in multinucleated giant cells. Fungal culture and identification revealed the pathogen was Sporotrix schenckii. He was treated with oral itraconazole 200mg daily for 20 weeks with complete resolution of the skin lesion. After 6-months follow up, there was no recurrence.
