Sensing capabilities for mobile robotics

Abstract: This chapter provides an overview of sensing capabilities for the estimation of distances and localization in a team of mobile robot platforms. This work, similar to others in this book, has been carried out in the context of the EU GUARDIANS project (Group of Unmanned Assistant Robots Deployed In Aggregative Navigation supported by Scent detection). There is a need for a localization method not only for robot platforms but also for fire fighters. This chapter will present an overview of the current sensing capabilities available, both commercial, and those not yet commercialized.
