Nanotechnology is the design, the creation and the use of materials having at least one dimension in the range from 1 nanometer to 100 nanometers. The use of nanotechnology in the production of plant protection products affects their greater efficiency more than their conventional counterparts. In order to improve the safety of the use of innovative applications of nanotechnology in this field, on the basis of Regulation 1107/2009/EC, it is advisable to introduce the requirement of a separate risk assessment and authorization for the placing on the market and use where nanomaterials are used in plant protection products for which authorization was already granted; moreover, the obligation to establish a separate approval of the active substance in the form of nanomaterial on the basis of detailed information taking into account the atypical properties of nanomaterials.
