The laser is constantly conquering new areas of application, and this also applies to medical engineering for the production of implantates and tools. At present, the machining of material by means of laser beams covers cutting, boring, welding and surface finishing. Here, the machining of biocompatible metals is becoming increasingly a domain of the laser and opens new product developments, as is demonstrated by the examples presented. According to experiences made so far stable processes are feasible with reproducible parameters permitting to obtain a faultless production. The laser thus already meets the stringent requirements of modern quality assurance
