Photochemistry of vicinal diaryl tetraketones

Irradiation of vicinal diaryl tetraketones in a variety of solvents yields tricyclic products 2 in high yields. The structure of the product from di-p-bromophenyl tetraketone was determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis.
