R3M Case studies: detecting reservoir resistivity in complex settings

2005
Relatively simple interpretation procedures can be used to detect reservoir resistivity in shallow, large, and otherwise geologically favorable targets, using marine controlledsource electromagnetics (MCSEM). We have accelerated research and development of interpretation technologies by applying MCSEM over more realistic and challenging targets, including subtle targets, and those in complex resistivity settings such as salt basins and mixed lithologic environments. We use 3D acquisition, modeling, and simulation techniques not necessarily required for simpler targets to analyze MCSEM data from challenging targets. Examples include successful pre-drill reservoir prediction in a salt mini-basin offshore West Africa, and successful pre-drill prediction of a small target located in a complex resistivity setting, that is, above, below, and adjacent to salt, also offshore West Africa.
