On the possibility of replacing Y with Sc in YBa2Cu3O7―δ; Magnetic, electrical and structural studies

Abstract Sc cannot be substituted for Y in orthorhombic YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ . We have corroborated these results by magnetic, electrical and structural investigations of a series of Y 1- x Sc x Ba 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ alloys. In particular the magnetic properties of these alloys are strongly influenced by ScBaCuO 3.5 which is found to have a magnetic moment of spin 1 2 per Cu atom.
