Applications of Microwaves in Medicine and Biology

Paper deals with description of research results in the area of applications of microwaves in medicine and biology done in the Czech Republic (mainly at the Czech Technical University in Prague), since the year 1981. It gives information about microwave technology in thermotherapy, oriented above all on cancer treatment. Principles for implementation of hyperthermia applicators will be mentioned. New ideas for 3D non-invasive temperature monitoring for hyperthermia cancer treatment, based on UWB radar system, will be discussed. Overview of prospective microwave methods in medical diagnostics, e.g. microwave radiometry, microwave differential tomography, etc. will be given. Last but not least, research of biological effects of EM fields (both thermal and non-thermal) will be presented. We will underline international cooperation of Czech researchers with experts from other countries.
