Situational and Communicative Predictors of Forgiveness Following a Relational Transgression

2011
The goal of the current investigation was to examine the situational and communicative factors that facilitate or inhibit forgiveness following a relational transgression. A sample of 360 college undergraduates reported on a transgression that had occurred in a current or past close relationship (friendship or romantic). Regression analysis indicated strong support for the role of remedial strategies in forgiveness and relationship reconciliation. The contribution of other predictors varied according to current relational status (intact or terminated) and whether forgiveness or unforgiveness was the criterion variable. The findings are summarized and discussed and future directions are suggested.
