Groping in the dark: magnetism and electricity from prehistory to (almost) Maxwell

Abstract The development of a science of magnetism and electricity is presented, from the remotest antiquity to the beginning of the XIX century. Early experiments were operating under very difficult conditions and had to discover in a painful and tortuous way many of the things which appear obvious to us. The present paper was conceived as a token of admiration for those pioneers.
