Background: While much work has been devoted to physician wellness, literature in pediatrics is limited and there is no published data specific to Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM). Wellness is multifaceted and includes positive traits like work engagement and negative traits like burnout. Work engagement is a positive state-of-mind combining vigor, dedication, and absorption. It is the antipode of burnout, which is characterized by emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. Prior studies have shown variation in burnout and work satisfaction among different specialties, so results from prior studies may not be generalizable to PHM.
