Roll calender and conversion process of a multi-roll

2009
The invention relates to a multi-roll calender (WFC) to a Gardner gloss greater than 75% or natural gravure papers (SCA) to a pps-10s roughness below with a roll stack which form in which each two successive rollers a nip for calendering of Wood Free Coated papers 1.15 microns or film coated Light Weight Coated papers (LWC) at a Gardner gloss over 55%. The invention further relates to a process for the conversion of a multi-roll calender, with such a roll stack. In order to calender the high quality papers with less rolling than usual, the roll stack is constructed in the following order: a hard controlled deflection upper roller, an elastic center roll with a thin metallic surface layer, a heatable hard center roll, two elastic means rollers with a thin metallic surface layer, heatable hard center roll, an elastic center roll with a thin metallic surface layer and a hard lower deflection-controlled roll.
