Thermodynamics of liquid Cu–Mg alloys

2004
Abstract The thermodynamic and surface properties of liquid Cu–Mg alloys have been investigated using the complex formation model. The free energy and heat of mixing have been reproduced by our expressions. The long wavelength concentration–concentration fluctuations ( S CC (0)) have been studied to investigate the stability and microscopic structural information about liquid Cu–Mg alloys. Chemical short range order parameter ( α 1 ) has been calculated from S CC (0) to quantify the degree of atomic order. The same energy parameters have been used to compute the viscosity of liquid Cu–Mg alloys. The study reveals that liquid Cu–Mg alloy is a weak interacting system. The study also suggests that Cu 2 Mg complexes exist in the liquid phase of Cu–Mg alloys and there is an order–disorder transformation.
