The American History of PTSD: Civil War -- Vietnam

Abstract : To understand the nature of the problem we face today, it is important to understand the extensive existence of PTSD throughout the history of the United States. By researching the transformation of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from an ill-understood disorder during the Civil War, World War I, and World War II, to a readily accepted diagnosis that began during the Korean War and was furthered through the Vietnam War, essential historical tenants and lessons learned appear. The good and bad practices resulting through much trial and error must be codified, studied, and implemented to ensure that the military does not disregard the lessons of past generations. PTSD continues to affect numerous soldiers long after the battles of the war; however, it is important for them to understand they are not alone. PTSD played a pivotal role during and after every war America has fought.
