Using Hyperbolic Trees and SmartBars within Virtual Learning Environment Concepts

Within the last years several projects were initiated to use modern information technology to integrate virtual learning environments in the existing so-called presence or new virtual universities. While virtual learning environments are developed in projects at various universities new and innovative ideas are still necessary. In this paper we suggest a browser-based concept for location independent learning with highly configurable components. Besides describing an XML-based foundation for the learning material, we introduce hyperbolic trees and SmartBars for an improved navigation as well as taking care of the social aspect of inter-personal communication.
