Newton’s divided difference interpolation using scientific calculator

2016
Occasionally, we may have to approximate the intermediate values between precise data points, i.e paired data from experiment. To do so, we need the interpolation methods, such as Lagrange Interpolation, Newton’s Interpolation, and spline interpolation. Constructing Newton’s divided difference Interpolating polynomial manually, especially for higher degree polynomial in classroom or examinations is tedious, boring and may lead to wrong answer. Hence, there is a need to design a suitable tool in teaching and learning the numerical methods, especially in Interpolation topic. Here, with the aid of the Casio fx-570ES plus scientific calculator, we present a new tip to approximate a missing function value within a given data list by using Newton’s divided difference Interpolating polynomial. In doing so, we employ the CALC function in the Casio fx-570ES plus scientific calculator. With the appropriate data list and the intermediate data value given by the user, the corresponding function value can be computed....
