Complexation in the Monomer–Solvent System under Copolymerization of N-Vinyl Succinimide with Styrene

2020
The effect of dimethyl sulfoxide on the copolymerization kinetics and reactivity parameters of N-vinyl succinimide has been studied. Based on a comparison of the results obtained for the copolymerization kinetics of N-vinyl succinimide with vinyl acetate and styrene in dimethyl sulfoxide, general tendencies in changing N-vinyl succinimide reactivity are revealed. It is proven that the complexation between monomeric molecules and dimethyl sulfoxide as an electron-donor solvent leads to a decrease in the relative reactivity of N-vinyl succinimide. Changes in the Alfrey–Price Q–e parameters for N-vinyl succinimide in the course of complexation have been analyzed. The reasons for the change in the reactivity of the monomer are revealed.
