가정적 인용표지의 담화 전략 연구

This research traces the developmental paths of the hypothetical quotatives -tayto and -layto from historical corpora and analyzes the development in view of grammaticalization mechanisms, with a special focus on their cognitive motivations. It further explores the discourse strategies they perform, thus identifying the relationship between the discourse strategies and grammatical markers. Following the grammaticalization principles, this paper argues that the development of those forms exhibits the divergence of the locution verb hA-, coexistence of multiple forms along the path (i.e., layering), phonological reduction and syntagmatic coalescence, among others. These hypothetical quotatives that originated from a source construction involving the grammatical devices for marking ‘quotation’ and ‘concessive’, also acquired the function as markers of intensified hypotheticality (i.e., irrealis hypothetical), and developed as markers of the speaker’s stance such as discontent. As a result of these functional expansions, the forms came to be recruited for strategically preempting the potential opposition from the discourse partner.
