Detection of drowsy driving via a dual control theoretic driver assistance

2015
Driver drowsiness is one of major causes of fatal traffic accidents. We proposed a driver assistance system with a dual control theoretic scheme, which tries to perform safety control of a vehicle as well as identification of a driver's state (e.g., low arousal, degradation of mental and physical states) simultaneously. The dual control theoretic driver assistance works in a situation-adaptive manner, and it takes into account sleepy driver characteristics and circumstantial contexts. This paper gives an analysis of driver behavior when the driver assistance is active, and discusses the type of assist that is effective for prevention of sleep-related vehicle accidents.
