A Technique for Scattered Event Compensation in a Pet System Using TOF Information

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a unique tool for the study of metabolism and biochemical mechanisms in human being. However clinical applications require that PET systems combine high resolution and low statistical fluctuations in order to provide an accurate quantitation of the radionuclide distribution in selected organs of the human body. Recently the Time of Flight (TOF) information has been shown to improve image quality (1,2,3,4) and is now used in different PET systems. Nevertheless the objectives of PET will only be reached when all physical aspects of positron emission and annihilation radiation detection are correctly taken into account.
