The lung in systemic lupus erythematosus

2021
Abstract Pulmonary manifestations in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are associated with significant morbidity and mortality and all compartments of the thorax can be impacted, either as part of the systemic disease or due to pulmonary infection, as a consequence of the immunosuppressive effects of the disease itself or the drugs used to treat it. Inflammation and dysregulation of immune responses are important drivers of lung pathology in autoimmune disease. This chapter focuses on immune-mediated mechanisms contributing to pulmonary manifestations in SLE, the clinical presentation and best management of such presentations and how novel pathways that regulate immune dysfunction in SLE may present new opportunities for treatment.
