Low-voltage ride through (LVRT) testing of full power converter for wind turbines using all-electronic equipment

This paper describes a laboratory platform for the low voltage ride through (LVRT) investigation of wind turbine (WT) generator based on full power back-to-back converters. The test bench is based on a power hardware in the loop (PHIL) platform emulating the behavior of wind turbines. The proposed approach potentially offers the advantage of simplifying the verification of LVRT technical requirements with respect to the existing in-field testing that uses expensive equipment for generating the voltage sags and depends on wind conditions. This paper describes the various steps of the wind turbine modeling and test bench design, and discusses the results of the LVRT testing of a 30.0 kW commercial full power backto-back converter.
