Is Extended Administration Time and/or Frequent Administration of Biapnem Always Effective?

2008
We examined whether extended administration time and/or frequent administration of biap‑ nem is really effective in respect to the length of time that the antibiotic concentration remains above the minimum inhibitory concentration(time above MIC:T>MIC) . We used a Monte Carlo simulation based on population pharmacokinetic parameters and a separate analysis of actual patients. Frequency and duration of infusion was varied:every 12 h (q12h) every 8 h(q8h) and every 6 h(q6h);with duration of infusions of 0.5 1 3 and 6 h for each regimen. The extended administration time and/or frequent administration of biapen‑ em were not always effective from both the Monte Carlo simulation analysis and actual patients'analysis. In some cases higher levels of T>MIC resulted but sometimes lower levels of T>MIC occurred. We conclude that the extended administration time and/or frequency of administration of biapenem should be determined after thorough examination of the patient concerned.
