Applications of genome editing in pet world

Abstract In today’s world, pet animals play a crucial role in the life of their owner, especially keeping depression away. There is an immense emotional bond that exists between a pet and their owner. Therefore the genetic improvement in the traits of pet animals will serve and benefit society. Applications of genome editing are becoming increasingly popular in the welfare of human beings and are improving traits (production, disease resistance, etc.) in livestock species as well as in plants. Gene editing of pets or companion animals is in the juvenile phase, however, successful development of super dogs and micro pigs using gene editing has shown promise and scope for its wider applicability in improving pets or companion animals. In this chapter, we summarize the applications of gene editing in pet animals with future prospects.
