Planning the Future for Chicago’s Water System

1958
The operation, design, and construction of the Chicago water works system were formerly carried on under the direction of the City Engineer in the Bureau of Engineering of the Department of Public Works. On January 1, 1953, all of the operating functions of the water system were placed under the Bureau of Water. Chicago is now eliminating possibilities of water shortages, and arrangements are being made to furnish water from the Lake Michigan source to suburban communities.
