Cancer patients in the hospital damaged by the Japan earthquake and tsunami.

e19508 Background: On March 11, the Great East Japan Earthquake hit the Sendai City. Water supplies and electric facilities were damaged seriously in many establishments, and our hospital was no exception. Because our hospital wards itself were also in the danger of collapsing, whole the oncologic patients were to be discharged. We investigated what became of the patients with cancer after the earthquake. Methods: We extracted the medical records of the patients with cancer, who were hospitalized when an earthquake occurred. Then, we retrospectively analyzed the destinations after the discharge and prognosis of each patient. Results: Among the 400 patients admitted, there stayed 75 patients with cancer, on March 11. Of these, the 75 patients were discharged to their home later, and the 48 patients were transferred to the other hospitals.
