Initial stage of the deformational mixing in the Fe/Ti system

2000
The deformational mixing of Fe and Ti atoms in Fe 80 Ti 20 mixture in the range of doses to 30 kJ/g was investigated using X-ray diffraction and 57 Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy. It was shown that, in the mechanical treatment of the mixture of powders, the formation of a solid solution of Ti in α-Fe proceeds in two stages. At the initial stage (at doses lower than 10 kJ/g), Ti atoms are distributed over intergrain boundaries of Fe, and iron atoms enter intergrain layers of Ti to yield intermediate FeTi complexes. At the second stage (at doses higher than 10 kJ/g), Ti atoms are redistributed between FeTi and α-Fe to yield a solid solution of titanium in α-Fe. The work of formation of the Fe/Ti interface in Fe 80 Ti 20 mixture is as high as 640 J/m 2 , whereas the nergy expended for the formation of intergrain boundaries in pure α-Fe is much lower and equal to 230 J/m 2 .
