There are proposed a method and an apparatus for the detection of wear on at least one component of an electric bicycle, wherein the operating state of the at least one component with at least one sensor (140, 150, ...) is monitored and is detected the load on the component over the operating life and the need for maintenance on a display unit (190) is displayed when a defined for this component continuous load threshold is reached, to alert the driver in good time to the need for maintenance.
