The Application of HVDC Transmission in Shore Power Supply

2017
In order to avoid the pollution by the emission of ships which docked in port, the shore power has become a trend. Nowadays, most of the electric power generation, transmission, distribution and consumption of high level are in alternating current form, so the HVAC transmission becomes the selection of shore power supply. However, put aside the great influence of HVAC on the environment, AC cables are also affected by reactive currents during transmission, which would reduce the power transmission capability of cables; and the transmission lines can also form a large capacitance with surrounding media (seawater, soil), which would affect the stable operation of the power grid. While HVDC transmission does not have this problem, the DC transmission system is formed by non-reactive DC circuit to connect two AC system, the conveying capacity and distance are not limited by the stability of synchronous operation, it can realize the non synchronous interconnection of the power grid. According to the development trend of power transmission, this paper searched an application of HVDC transmission in the shore power supply.
