s / Drug and Alcohol Dependence 140 (2014) e2–e85 e11 Conclusions: The results of the present longitudinal study suggest that most smokers in this nationally representative sample of adolescentswhowere followed into early adulthood are characterized as being occasional users. Further, we found that depressive symptoms influence the groupof adolescentswho steadily increase the number of cigarettes smoked per day in early adulthood. The findings have implications for coordinated mental health and substance use treatment.
