Study on the skid resistance of asphalt pavement: A state-of-the-art review and future prospective

Abstract Deep insight on the skid resistance is vital to keep the driving safety and reduce the traffic accident rate. Conventional research mainly focuses on the skid resistance performance measurement under the specific conditions. It cannot reveal the skid resistance mechanism from the material genes, and cannot accurately characterize the spatiotemporal variability behavior of the skid resistance of asphalt pavement under the multiple parameters. Moreover, the real-time safety information cannot be provided for drivers by the conventional single value measurement under the given time. In this study, the state-of-the-art research focus related to the skid resistance was illustrated in detail in terms of mechanism, measurement methods, spatiotemporal variability behavior, and application. The research gaps and the future works for each item were also presented based on the analysis for the current investigations. Moreover, a novel conceptional design of real-time safety early-warning system was proposed to guide the better applications for the measured skid resistance values.
