A comparison study of KABP related to HIV/AIDS between drug users and commercial sexual workers in Fujian Province

Objectives To assess the knowledge,attitudes,beliefs and practices related to HIV/AIDS among drug users and commercial sexual workers in Fujian province,and to provide suggestions for implementing HIV/AIDS prevention and intervention programs.Methods 185 drug users and 159 commercial sexual workers were interviewed using a structured questionnaire among detainees in four detention centers to collect the information on interviewees' knowledge,attitudes,beliefs and practices related to HIV/AIDS.Comparison was made to find the differences between the two groups.Results Sixty-eight percent of drug users injected drugs.Many drug users and commercial sexual workers were not aware of their risk behaviors.Drug users had higher HIV/AIDS knowledge level than commercial sexual workers.Commercial sexual workers tended to discriminate against people who live with HIV/AIDS more than drug users.Factors related to high-risk behaviors included male,low income,not aware of risk of behaviors.Factors related to level of HIV/AIDS knowledge included education,marital status,knowing where to learn HIV/AIDS knowledge and where to take HIV testing etc.Conclusions Level of HIV/AIDS knowledge need to be improved among drug users and commercial sexual workers in Fujian province through multi-format of education in order to promote the change of their high-risk behaviors.
