Study of Argentinian and Brasilian Nuclear Symbiotic Scenarios using CLASS

2016
The aim of this paper is to analyze and compare nuclear scenarios including the Argentinian and the Brazilian nuclear fleets working either in a collaborative scenario or separately. Brazilian nuclear fleet is composed of PWRs (Pressurized Water Reactors). For decades, Argentina has been operating Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR), in particular a Canadian Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) type reactor. Thanks to their very efficient neutron economy, those reactors are known to be able to accept large spectrum of fuel types. They can be critical when fueled by DUPIC (Direct Use of PWR fuel in CANDU), or with reprocessed fuel from irradiated enriched uranium. They could be even almost breeders if used with thorium-‐based fuels. In this paper, we present how the specific reactor physics of CANDU have been implemented in the scenario code CLASS (Core Library for Advanced Scenario Simulation). Then we discuss the advantages of a collaborative scenario between Argentina and Brazil.
