The influence of SPD on the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect in an AlMgMnZr alloy

The effect of severe plastic deformation (SPD) on the characteristics of the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect (PLC) in the AlMgMnZr alloy was studied. It was found that the grain refinement leads to the changes of the characteristics of the PLC effect. In the fine-grained material, an increased amplitude of the stress serrations and shifted critical strain for the onset of serrations was observed. Moreover, the grain refinement leading to the changes in the usual sequence of stress serrations types. In the severely strained material with a mean grain size of ∼1 µm the decrease in the amplitude of the stress serrations takes place.
