State Estimation of Power Systems With TCSCs Using the Linearized WLS Algorithm

The recent popularization and increasing insertion of FACTS controllers in power systems around the world has led to the need for modeling and incorporating such devices in the traditional methodologies of power systems analysis. The concept of FACTS devices is directly related to operational improvements of power grids, making them electronically controllable, since the variation of their parameters enables the active control of the system. The present work focuses on the state estimation of power systems containing FACTS devices, specifically the TCSC controller. The proposed methodology is based on a DC WLS state estimator and has applications in determining the equivalent TCSC reactance in order to maintain the desired active power flow in the controlled branches. Results of tests with the IEEE 14-bus system are presented and discussed.
