Effect of Catgut-embedment in Acupoints on Electroencephalogram of Experimental Epilepsy Rats

【Objective】To observe the effect of catgut-embedment(CE)in acupoints on electroencephalogram(EEG)of experimental epilepsy rats.【Methods】Fifty rats were randomized into blank control group,model control group,western medicine(WM)group,catgut-embedment(CE)group and acupuncture(Acup)group.Rat models of epilepsy were induced by intraperitoneal injection of penicillin 5.70 million U/kg and then were treated according to the experimental design.The changes of EEG voltage and frequency in brain midline forehead zone(Fz)and parietal zone(Pz)were observed 70~85 minutes after the modeling.【Results】The EEG voltage of Fz and Pz in the model group was obviously higher than that in the blank group(P0.01),while that in the western medicine group,catgut-embedment group and acupuncture group was lower than that in the model group(P0.05 or P0.01).The EEG frequency A in the model group was slower than that in the blank group,while that in the three treatment groups was increased as compared with that in the model group,and frequency A became the fastest in catgut-embedment group,particularly in Pz(P0.05 or P0.01).The EEG frequency B in Fz and Pz of the model group was slower than that in the blank group,while that in the catgut-embedment group and acupuncture group was increased as compared with that in the model group(P0.05 or P0.01),and the frequency B in the western medicine group was not obviously increased(P0.05).【Conclusion】Catgut-embedment in acupoints,acupuncture and western medicine can obviously decrease voltage of epileptic discharge and increase EEG frequency,and has an obvious anti-epilepsy effect on experimental epilepsy rats.However,CE has the advantages of prolonging acupoint effect and reducing the frequency of treatment as compared with acupuncture,and has no toxic and side effects of western medicine.
