The article addresses the causes of periodontal inflammatory diseases and state-of-art aspects of treatment. The lipid oxidation has been shown as one of the leading causes of periodontal tissue diseases. The antioxidant protection system can perform its function normally only in the settings of sufficient amounts of microelements, including a significant microelement such as selenium. The normal selenium level has a significant impact on antioxidant processes, not only in the tissues of periodontal but also in other organs. Thus, the adding of selenium supplements in the treatment to achieve the most favorable results is pathogenetically justified.
